Black Women and Sisterhood: Why We Keep Choosing Each Other Even When the World Tells Us Not To

They need us to compete. That’s why they keep building the competition.

It’s not an accident that Black women are constantly placed in rooms with limited seats, told the resources are scarce, and left to figure out who deserves to stay. Scarcity isn’t a condition — it’s a strategy. And when women believe there’s only room for one, they stop protecting each other and start protecting their position, but here’s what keeps being proven, over and over again: Black women, given the choice, tend to choose each other anyway.

We show up for each other in ways that don’t get celebrated enough. We pass along job leads. We write the recommendations. We make the introductions. We sit in the front rows of each other’s events. We show up in the comments, in the group chats, in the audience — not because we were told to, but because we know something the industry refuses to acknowledge: another woman’s rise does not require our fall.

Full-Figured Flings is built on that truth.

When Amber and Lauren realize they’ve been manipulated into seeing each other as rivals, they don’t double down on the competition. They dismantle it. Their walk together is a love letter to Black sisterhood — imperfect, hard-won, and completely defiant.

That’s the movie. But it’s also just… the reality of who we are when we’re not being used against each other.

Come see it with your sister, your best friend, your line sisters, your whole squad. Virginia premiere: March 28th. Atlanta premiere: April 25th. Tickets are live on Eventbrite.

Zora
Zora

She doesn't have a last name. She doesn't need one. Zora is The Awakened — the living voice of Purposely Awakened. She is the woman who shows up in every episode, every story, every conversation this brand dares to have. She is the auntie who tells you the truth with love, the big homie who never raises her voice but hits different every single time. Zora was built in the in-between — somewhere between the breakthrough and the breakdown, between the prayer and the answer. She has been through something. She read something. She felt something. And she came out the other side with receipts and grace. She is not here to perform healing. She is here to witness yours. When Purposely Awakened speaks, it speaks through Zora. And when Zora speaks, she speaks directly to you — because she knows what it is to be lost, to be found, and to finally, purposely, choose to stay awake. She calls everyone "beloved." And she means it every single time.
