Atlanta, GA – Emmy-nominated journalist Nakell Williams has joined CBS Atlanta as a reporter for the network’s brand-new owned-and-operated station, focusing on the City of South Fulton—a community she knows, loves, and is deeply passionate about.
With graduate studies in public administration and community & economic development at Clark Atlanta University, Williams offers unique insight into how policy, leadership, and development affect people’s daily lives. Her previous public service includes roles with former Mayor Shirley Franklin’s Atlanta Office of Weed and Seed, the Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership founded by the late Hattie Dorsey, and the Governor’s Office of Planning & Budget under Governor Sonny Perdue.
“These experiences shaped my understanding of how policy, development, and leadership impact people’s daily lives—insight I now bring to my storytelling,” Williams said. “I’m eager to use my God-given gifts to help build this newsroom under the leadership of Shawn Hoder and Nichole Green and to share South Fulton’s stories with depth, accuracy, fairness, and care.”
Before her Atlanta return, Williams was the main anchor for WAAY 31 News in Huntsville, Alabama, where she became a trusted voice in the Tennessee Valley for four years. In her farewell, she expressed gratitude to the community: “The support, encouragement, and kindness I’ve received has meant more than I can put into words… I’ll always be grateful for the impact this city has had on me and for the friendships I’ve made along the way—some of which will last a lifetime.”
Williams’ new role represents more than a career move—it’s a homecoming and a renewed commitment to amplifying local voices. Her passion for authentic storytelling aligns perfectly with Awakened Lounge’s mission to spotlight creatives and leaders of color who inspire transformation within their communities.
