The event in Queens brought out King Jammy, King Addies, King Turbo, Sister Nancy, Johnny Osbourne, Aza Lineage, and more
VP Records celebrated Record Store Day on Saturday, April 12, with a five-hour outdoor sound system session at its Jamaica, Queens retail store. The event also marked the reissue of One Two, the 1982 debut album by Sister Nancy.
Hosted by Chin of Sound Chat Radio, the afternoon featured live sets from King Jammy’s, King Addies with Danny Dread, Mikey Jarrett, and Obi Roots, and King Turbo. Opening sets came from Nexxt Level and Kulcha Kartel. Throughout the day, the sound systems fired off their anthems from deep in their dub collections, drawing longtime fans and vinyl collectors despite steady light rain.
Inside the store, Sister Nancy held a signing from 2 to 5 p.m. to celebrate the reissue of One Two—pressed for the first time since its original 1982 release. Fans traveled from across the tri-state area and beyond to meet the pioneering artist.
Sister Nancy, unannounced, took control of the mic halfway through King Jammy’s set and began toasting as DJ Shemmo cycled through various riddims. She was joined by Johnny Osbourne, Aza Lineage, and Medisun—each offering their own performance to help close out the day on a high note.
